Governor Kitzhaber, showing he’s got a very stiff upper lip, has doggedly maintained that everything that should be done to look into First Lady Cylvia Hayes’ financial and political dealings over the last couple of years is being accomplished by the State Ethics Commission. And he’s waiting for the commission to release its findings.
But Republican lawmakers, obviously still smarting from Kitzhaber’s trouncing of their political standard-bearer in the last governor’s election, Rep. Dennis Richardson, are turning up the “We told ya so” political heat on Kitzhaber this week. They’re even demanding that the State Attorney General’s Office launch a criminal investigation based on allegations that Hayes took pay from a couple of companies that were involved in certain policy programs dealing with the Kitzhaber administration.
And on top of that, the Editorial Board of the Oregonian newspaper has called on Kitzhaber to resign his office – a request that Kitzhaber quickly dismissed. Secretary of State Kate Brown also poo-poo’d calls for a recall election against Kitzhaber – Brown stating that no such election can occur until Kitzhaber is six months into his current term – which would be at the end of June.
