The Sea Lion Dock Foundation and the public are celebrating the completion of the first half of the renovation of the Sea Lion Docks down on the Newport Bayfront.
Foundation Director Bob Ward says the “double sized” docks have attracted a double-sized group of the pennepids to the delight of locals and tourists.
Meanwhile, Ward says they’ll be driving more piles very soon for the expanded public viewing platform that will jut out from the top of the dock. Ward says it’s necessary to keep sea lion viewers off the working area of the dock so fishermen can move equipment and supplies back and forth to their boats.
A new wrinkle in all this is that the entire sea lion dock project is costing more than originally expected. Ward says they need another $40,000 to complete the public viewing platform and that the foundation is out looking for money. Anyone who would like to donate what they can to the effort is free to do so by going to their website at NewportSeaLionDocks.com or just click here.
The website also has a live video cam running 24/7 so everyone can look on and enjoy the antics of the sea going beasties.
