The Yachats Academy of Arts and Sciences is privileged to present Dr. Jon Roush on Friday, February 6, 6:30 PM at the Yachats Commons. His presentation is titled “Conservation in the 21st Century”.
Mr. Roush began his conservation career in 1970 with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), first as a field representative and then as Executive Vice President. He left TNC in 1977 to start a small ranching business in western Montana. Over the next decade, he developed a successful model system of ranch management, using ecological principles and humane animal care. While in Montana, Jon formed Canyon Consulting and advised environmental groups, from British Columbia to Puerto Rico, on organizational strategy.
In 1993, he became the President of The Wilderness Society (TWS). He left TWS in 1996 to return to an independent consulting practice with his wife, Joyce Chinn.
They worked with nonprofit conservation organizations, public agencies, and philanthropies related to natural resource conservation. They have advised over one hundred clients, from British Columbia to Puerto Rico, as well as international organizations like The National Geographic Society.
Jon has served on several national and regional nonprofit boards. A few years ago, he retired after 15 years on the board of the Indian Law Resource Center, which advocates for indigenous tribal sovereignty. And he recently retired from the board of the Western Rivers Conservancy.
He has received national awards for his conservation work. His articles on conservation and organizational strategy have appeared in numerous national journals and books.
