Soprano Amy Hansen and collaborative pianist Cary Lewis look forward to presenting one of their favorite repertoires called the “Schubertiades” at the next OCCMS concert on January 31st at 3pm in an ocean-view Depoe Bay home. Not only do they both enjoy Franz Schubert’s compositions, but they look forward to presenting Schubert’s songs set to piano in a home setting as Schubert did on evenings spent with a close-knit circle of artists and students for whom he played his latest songs. Since Schubert was a prolific composer, Cary and Amy chose a range of songs from the well-known to the more unique operatic Italian pieces full of tender new love and feverish rejection. Amy elaborates when she says, “…his incredible knack for setting a poem, evoking nature, motion and weather in the piano accompaniment, and stirring the listener’s heart with clear feeling make singing his songs thrilling.” Cary and Amy will round out the Schubert works with songs by contemporary American composer, Ned Rorem, a living composer whose songs also reflect on the human heart.
Amy Hansen, an accomplished vocalist, graduated with honors from Oberlin Conservatory and has performed as a resident artist of the Portland Opera and in prestigious concert halls across the U.S. and around the world. Oregon audiences have enjoyed Amy’s performances at the Cascade Music Festival, the Astoria Music Festival, the Portland Opera, and other prominent venues. Her voice has been described as clear, rich, vibrant, textured, bell-like, radiant and meltingly beautiful. Cary Lewis is in constant demand as a collaborative pianist and has performed with many well-known artists. He, too, has performed in famous concert halls in the U.S. and abroad. He has been a member of various trios and chamber music groups including the acclaimed Lanier Trio of which he was a co-founder and which produced a CD of Dvorak’s Trios hailed by TIME magazine as one of the ten best musical CDs of any kind in 1993. Cary is the Director of Chamber Music for the Astoria Music Festival.
