Well over 100 Yachats residents filled the multi-purpose room of The Commons Tuesday night to hear David Elmer, President/CEO of First Community Credit Union, tell Yachats why he wants to open a full-service branch in Yachats and what they can offer its citizens.
The towns only bank, Bank of the West, owned by a San Francisco corporation, announced recently it was pulling out of Yachats effective late January. The bad news prompted several residents, including Max Glen, to begin polling other banking institutions as to whether they would like to fill the void being left by Bank of the West.
Glen and others were very impressed with the possibility of having First Community Credit Union do just that. Tuesday night First Community’s President and CEO David Elmer, and some of his staff, presented their proposal to about 160 enthusiastic attendees. Mr. Elmer said he was quite gratified at the turnout and for the enthusiasm of the community to have First Community consider Yachats for it’s next branch. First Community already has 29 branches throughout Western Oregon.
Max Glen says the formal decision to open a branch in Yachats will be made by First Community’s Board of Directors on January 27. Mr. Elmer again thanked the community and said he and his staff will do all they can to make the transition as smooth as possible. In the meantime Mr. Elmer suggested that all those interested in doing their banking with First Community to please visit their website at MyFirstCCU.org for a comprehensive look at First Community and all the financial services it offers.
Now the town maybe can concentrate on getting the its only gas station back open. It’s currently 17 miles round trip to Waldport to get gas.
