The Coast Guard Saturday afternoon got a report of a boat taking on water near Cape Perpetua. Local fire rescue personnel scrambled to assess the situation and began coordinating communications with the Coast Guard helicopter that just happened to be flying through the area.
The Coast Guard says their helo out of North Bend is making a grid search of the entire area to ascertain whether there is, in fact, a boat in distress or any debris from a sinking. Thus far they haven’t seen anything.
The report came from a whale watcher who said she could see a boat well offshore that appeared to be bobbing low in the waves. Of course, that is a common sight along Oregon’s coastline where wave heights are quite substantial. It is not unusual to see a boat disappear completely from view from the perspective of someone on the beach. It’s when the boat doesn’t back into sight that constitutes a real emergency.
