Call out for beach volunteers – Storm debris clean up!!

Emergency call-out for volunteers to help clean up storm debris!!

Emergency call-out for volunteers to help clean up storm debris!!

From Surfrider:

If you have been on our beaches lately you know there is an influx of debris on them due to the high tides and winter storms. Two sites that are in special need are Taft Beach that has three river docks beached on it, and Moolack Beach that has more than the usual amount of domestic and Tsunami marine debris. We need your help next week for these two rapid response cleanups.

Taft Dock Removal
Date: Monday December 29th, 9am to 12pm
Place: Taft (South Lincoln City)
Meeting Place:
Mo’s in Taft (Meet in front of Mo’s)
860 Southwest 51st Street, Lincoln City, OR 97367

Cleanup Details:
Three river docks have washed up on the Taft Beach. The docks have wood, nails, rope and Styrofoam that are littering the beach as the winter storms batter them. The State Parks rangers will be there to help haul away the larger pieces and debris bags. We need about 10 volunteers to help dismantle the dock and pick up Styrofoam and other smaller parts that are littering this beach as a result of these docks.

If you would like to try to car pool contact me and I will try to put together groups. I will be leaving Newport at 8:20am and have room for three others. Please bring rakes, hammers with nail pullers, crowbars, bolt cutters, knives that can cut poly-rope easily, or other portable demolition type tools.
Please let Vince know if you plan to attend so we can meet up at Mo’s before heading to the cleanup spot.

Moolack Beach Cleanup
Date: Saturday January 3rd, 2pm to 4pm
Place: Moolack Beach
Meeting Place:
US 101 Parking Area at Moolack Beach.
5 Miles North of Newport

Cleanup Details:
Individuals like Don Sarver and others have already removed hundreds of pounds from this beach in recent days and there is still lots more plastic bins, bottles, rope, unrecognizable plastic debris, and crab floats.

We will meet at the US 101 Moolack Beach parking area and pick up debris both to the north and south of there. Ambitious volunteers can walk 2 miles south to Beverly Beach or north to Otter Rock and leave debris at the final destination. If you arrange ahead of time I can shuttle volunteers back to the US 101 Moolack parking lot.

If you have questions on either of these cleanups please contact Vince. Please spread the word to others and come join us for these two events. RSVP’ing also helps us plan on supplies for these events.
