News Lincoln County has been receiving reports of birds dying along the coast. A quick call to ODFW revealed that die offs are common after big storms when feeding routines get interrupted by heavy rains and wind. However this time around, ODFW says Cassins Auklets seem to be taking a big hit. One theory is that the bird’s primary diet, little crustaceans, are not as plentiful due to increased acid levels in the oceans – a result of greenhouse gas uptake.
ODFW said the die off appears to be affecting the Auklets the most. However, News Lincoln County has gotten reports that some seagull and mallards also have been found deceased along and around area beaches.
Anyone walking along the beach or near a body of water that finds a dead bird, take a picture of it with your cell phone and email it to Doug Cottam at ODFW. His email is
