In response to Fishermen’s Wives claims that closing the Coast Guard Air Rescue facility at the Newport Airport will severely endanger lives, and cause needless death off the Oregon Coast, the Coast Guard has filed legal papers of their own with the federal court in Eugene claiming there is no proof of that. The Coast Guard also maintains that safety will actually be enhanced by the closure of the base rather than leaving it open.
Fishermen’s Wives Attorney Michael Haglund called the Coast Guard’s claim ridiculous based on the history of the Newport’s Air Facility rescue record, especially in light of last week’s rescue of five commercial fishermen nearly eight miles off the Lincoln City coast.
All this is part of a showdown between the Coast Guard and Fishermen’s Wives and the city and port newport, and Lincoln County when they face off December 11th in federal court in Eugene. Here’s more from the Oregonian. Click here.
