Central Coast Chorale presents holiday concerts
The Central Coast Chorale will set a festive tone this season during their annual holiday concerts. The 50-member group will perform a variety of styles of music ranging from “O Magnum Mysterium” by popular composer Morten Lauridsen to Irving Berlin’s “Snow” from “White Christmas.” Enjoy this holiday music on Friday, December 12th at 7:30 p.m. at the Waldport Community Presbyterian Church or on Sunday, December 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
The 80-minute concert will open with the upbeat “Jubilate Deo” by Althouse and move to the haunting traditional “The Huron Carol” arr. by Daley. Celebratory songs like “Birthday Carol” by Willcocks and “In Excelsis Deo!” by Gilpin are interspersed with sweet lullabies (“Lully, Lulla, Lullay” by Stopford) and evocative winter songs (Thomas Miller’s “The Frozen December”).
The antiphonal piece “Hodie Christus natus est” by J.P. Sweelinck is a sparkling Christmas Day song of celebration in the rennaisance style. The choir will also reprise Palestrina’s “Gloria,” another beautiful rennaisance piece they performed last year.
Several of the songs will be performed a capella. Pianist Ramona Martin will accompany all others.
The concerts will also feature the vocal octet Women of Note. Their set will include a jazzy “Cool Yule” as recorded by Louis Armstrong, the traditional “Wassail! Wassail!”, and a festive madrigal titled “Throw Open Your Shutters!” by Bernon. The concert will close with the chorale’s warm wishes for a wonderful holiday in the John Rutter piece, “I Wish You Christmas.”
The Sunday performance at the PAC will include prelude music from the CCC Handbell Choir. Bell ringers will perform in duets, trios, and quartets. Come to the concert early to enjoy these performers in the lobby.
Suggested admission donation is $10.00. The Waldport Community Presbyterian Church is located at 485 NE Bay Street in Waldport. For more information call Chorale Director MaryLee Scoville at 541-563-6830.
