Depoe Bay’s Iconic Community Hangout is no longer. Owner Betty Taunton, who used to run it with her husband (since deceased) awoke a few weeks ago and decided that getting good help was just too hard, and that without good help she was past the point of running the restaurant on her own.
So she closed it down. The building is for sale.
It’s a huge loss for the small harbor town of Depoe Bay, because according to long time native Bill Spores, The Spouting Horn was the OTHER city hall where people gathered to talk about the latest news or community developments – a “go to” place for the REAL “straight scoop” on what was happening around town, to whom, by whom and why. It was also a kind of community living room where you could have all your friends over and no one had to do the dishes.
Besides being Depoe Bay’s touchstone for current events and latest scuttlebutt, it was also a place where young people could get their first taste of gainful employment. Many a Depoe Bay resident lists The Spouting Horn at the top of their resumes – often their first job as a teenager.
Betty’s pies were legendary – especially her blueberry and mince meat pies. Spores says there’s an army of families out there that will be missing one of their own deeply felt family traditions – a holiday pie from Betty Taunton’s Spouting Horn.
Betty is quoted as saying she’s happy to be retired and intends to enjoy her new found freedom from the daily machinations of running the social, and frequently political hub of the town.
It goes without saying that it’s a big loss to the home of the World’s Smallest Harbor. So we won’t say it.
