Four brand new stop signs have been erected at the intersection of 7th and Harney near the middle school. The addition of the stop signs all around was prompted by the heavy traffic at that intersection at the beginning and the end of the school day for Newport Intermediate and Issac Newton Magnet Schools.
Public Works Director Tim Gross said that a big part of the motivation was watching students come down 7th from the school and not being completely mindful of what’s going on around them – including oncoming traffic. So, to reduce the hazard for students and pedestrians they’ll have stop signs at all four corners to give students a little safer environment
Any motorist that insists on “rolling” the stop signs, or by habit, fails to stop at a stop sign, will be pulled over and issue a warning – but only for the next 30 days. After that they’ll get tickets which are quite expensive. Don’t forget those kinds of violations tend to raise insurance rates on your car, too.
