Newport Police were called to the Yaquina Bay Bridge shortly after 6pm Monday evening on a report that a woman had thrown her six year old from the center span of the Yaquina Bay Bridge. The woman called 9-1-1 and reported the incident herself.
Police quickly cordoned off the bridge and launched a search of areas under the bridge and areas just east of the bridge because during the six o’clock hour the tide was coming in quite strongly.
Thermal imagers were used to ply the waters in the area but found no sign of the boy.
The woman was taken in to custody and interviewed by investigators. She reportedly told dispatch and police that she was hearing voices in her head that told her to throw her son off the bridge and so she did. And then she called 9-1-1 to report the incident.
The Coast Guard and Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel searched the waters east of the bridge. But came up with nothing.
Then, shortly before 11pm, the body of a young boy, in a white shirt, was discovered floating near the Embarcadero on the Bayfront.
The body has been identified as that of the missing boy from the bridge incident. The mother remains in custody.
10:15pm – POSSIBLE WITNESS WHO SAW THE MOTHER AND CHILD JUST BEFORE THE INCIDENT
NewsLincolnCounty.com just got an email from a Seal Rock woman who said she saw a woman hurridly pulling a young boy along on the the sidewalk on bridge. Here’s her statement which has been forwarded to Police.
I saw them both on the bridge at about 6 when I was driving by. I remember them because it was dark and I thought it was strange that someone with such a young kid would be walking across the bridge. They had just gotten on the north end of the bridge when I saw them. She was wearing a long dark skirt and long sleeve dark shirt and he was wearing a checkered flannel type shirt and maybe khaki pants, I don’t remember. She seemed to be pulling him along rather quickly.
