I have lived in Newport since 1976, and have practiced general and trauma surgery until retiring in the early 1990s.
I feel that what really qualifies me for the job is what has been done in the last nearly four years since I was elected. We have new leadership in the Fire Dept that is very progressive. Also a new public works director (Tim Gross) who is a “get things done” kind of guy which is direly needed with so much water, sewer, streets and other infrastructure work to do.
A great new city manager, Spencer Nebel, has been brought on board in the last year and just recently a new finance director Finally a really “good fit” – a new city attorney will start in December.
I don’t claim credit for all this, as David Allen, Sandy Roumagoux, and Dean Sawyer have all been aboard for the same period. Please note that David, Sandy and Councilor Mark Saelens, as well as myself, are all up for re-election. We seem to be getting things done well. Why change now? If it aint broke, don’t fix it!
