A vehicle has hit a deer on Highway 229 about halfway between Siletz and Kernville. Law enforcement is enroute. A tow for the vehicle has been ordered.
Oregon deer are in the middle of their rutting season so they’re out at night in great numbers. Law enforcement urges drivers to slow down their night driving to give themselves time to stop or to take evasive action that doesn’t lead to your vehicle leaving the road.
Some well experienced rural drivers suggest that you use your low beams and slow down. If you drive on your high beams, they more brightly light up the road ahead which draws deer out of the woods that want to cross the road. So they “go for it” which causes an accident.
