Riding one of the last sunny breezes of the Summer, the Columbus Day Hospice Regatta continues today (Sunday) sailing their wind-catchers on Yaquina Bay to raise funds for the Newport area Samaritan Pacific Hospice.
The gathering of sailing families began as the annual Columbus Day Regatta in 1947, nearly 70 years ago. Newport area YBYC member and family physician Giovanni Catalano suggested they partner with the National Hospice Regatta Alliance to raise money for the local hospice. The Newport area Samaritan Pacific Hospice quickly got on board and helped us put together an extremely successful event and to make it an annual event.
The National Hospice Regatta Alliance is a network of charity sailing regattas, 24 independent regional hospice regattas allied in a national organization which aims to increase fundraising, publicity and awareness for hospice care. Top teams from regional sailing regattas compete each year in the Hospice Regattas National Championship, the only national sailing championship for charity in the U.S.
