U DA MAN Salmon Tournament
The 2014 U DA MAN Salmon Tournament saw 156 individual entrants in 54 tournament registered boats. Entrants were allowed to fish from the tips of the Newport jetties to approximately 1 mile east of Cannon Quarry County Park on the Yaquina River from 7:00 AM to 3:15 PM.
Winners of this year’s event for the largest Chinook were:
1st Dustin Boatright $500
2nd Don Schmidt $300
3rd Mark Sax $200
The winner of the single largest Coho in the side pot event was by Chad Freeborn which paid $425.
The U DA MAN group wishes to thank all the area businesses, individuals and those who entered the tournament for their continued support. We also wish to thank the members of the Longview Hills Fishing Club, Central Coast Fly Fishers and student volunteers from the Newport High School Leadership Class who assisted on tournament day. All proceeds from this event are used to enhance salmon populations in the Yaquina River system by working with area partners and state agencies.
Past habitat enhancement projects by the group include stream and river cleanups, placement of recycled Christmas in the Yaquina river to help provide temporary protection for migrating salmon smolts from predatory birds, support of the proposed establishment of spring Chinook in Yaquina Bay and stream and spawning bed enhancements.
In 2013, U DA MAN established a $500 scholarship fund for any qualified graduating senior in Lincoln County who attends college with a major in the fisheries sciences.
