Regatta benefits hospice patients
Newport – The Yaquina Bay Yacht Club (YBYC) will dedicate funds raised through its annual Columbus Day Hospice Regatta to benefit Samaritan Pacific Hospice. The Columbus Day Hospice Regatta is one of 27 such races held throughout the United States and Canada as a part of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance. Scheduled for October 11 and 12 on Yaquina Bay, the YBYC event is one of only three hospice regattas held on the West Coast.
For more than 40 years, the YBYC has hosted the Columbus Day Regatta, a series of sailboat races on Yaquina Bay. Up to 30 boats, ranging from 12 to 40 feet, come from the Pacific Northwest to compete. Boats race in fleets with boats of similar size – making for quite a spectacle on the bay. Regatta activities include the following:
Saturday, October 11
Purchase a memorial sail to honor a loved one. Sails will be displayed at the YBYC throughout the weekend.
Watch the races from the shores of Yaquina Bay – approximately noon to 4:30 p.m.
Visit the YBYC for raffles starting at 11 a.m.
Enjoy a Marine Discovery Cruise with race commentary and box lunch catered by the Embarcadero – 1 to 3 p.m. ($50 each). (Seating is limited and reservations are required.)
Dine with the Sailors – fresh tuna BBQ and live music performed by DNR and the Toe Tags at the YBYC – 6 to 10 p.m. ($20 each). (Seating is limited and reservations are required.)
Sunday, October 12
Watch the races from the shores of Yaquina Bay – approximately 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
