Government support for our elementary, middle and high schools, for our roads, highways and freeways, for providing a cleaner, healthier environment and safer communities is pretty much accepted as “the thing to do.” Why? Because that’s the way it’s always been.
But something like public colleges and universities that used to be…USED TO BE primarily funded by the government are now more and more being funded by the students themselves!?? Kind of like army recruits having to pay for their own guns, jet fighters and tanks.
Since when did that happen!!? Probably at about the time that we started seeing government money erode for roads, highways, bridges and many areas of public school instruction.
You might call it creeping “retailism.” If you want it, ya gotta buy it. Even if it’s something the country desperately needs our children to have in order to keep our economy growing. What ought to rank right up there with clean air and healthy food is now being treated just like any other profit center. Good for the banks, but it’s a ball and chain for young families who are trying to pay off a mountain of debt even before they can begin buying a home or even a car. And that’s not good for the economy. In fact it slows it down.
