***TELEPHONE SCAM ALERT***
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has become aware of a number of fraud complaints being investigated by the Newport Police Department related to a telephone scam.
Several Newport residents have reported receiving telephone calls from a male claiming to be a law enforcement official. He tells victims that they have a warrant out for their arrest for failing to show up for jury duty and that the fine is $1,500. The caller directs victims to pay a $1,500 fine or they’ll be arrested. The caller provides an account number into which the victim is to pay the fine.
The Sheriff’s Office says if anyone gets these kinds of phone calls, do not give the caller any personal or financial information. DO NOT give your credit card number or your bank account information. If you have caller ID, write down the number showing up on your phone. Immediately notify local law enforcement by dialing 9-1-1.
