A couple of fishermen in a small drift boat on the Siuslaw River suffered engine trouble soon after launching yesterday afternoon along Highway 126 at about milepost 3.
The two men rowed their boat down current, aiming for a nearby private dock. Once secured to it, one of the fishermen began walking to their pickup just upstream so they could retrieve their boat.
After returning with their truck and trailer, Oregon State Police say 81-year old Eldon Nordahl, the property owner, emerged from his house and told the men they couldn’t leave. Then Nordahl went into his house and re-emerged with a rifle with which he proceeded to blow a hole in the boat’s hull. As he was reloading, the men jumped into their truck and roared off but not before Nordahl got off another shot that penetrated the boat’s motor.
Oregon State Police responded to the scene and subsequently arrested Nordahl for unlawful use of a weapon, pointing a firearm at a person, recklessly endangering a person and menacing. The OSP confiscated the rifle and ammunition and hauled him off to jail.
Oregon State Police are asking that if anyone else saw the incident to please call them at 800-472-7888 and leave a message for Trooper Candyce Fiddy.
