From Newport Police
School has started! Hundreds of school children are converging on Sam Case School, Newport Intermediate School, and Newport High School. A lot of parents are providing transportation to and from schools in the morning and afternoons. The amount of traffic around the schools is problematic in that the volume of cars causes delays, backups, and congestion. The number of cars arriving at schools creates a hazardous condition for those students who walk to school, and to other drivers in the area.
If parents find they must drive their children to school, that is fine. However, if there is a way to contact other parents and create a carpool to school, it would greatly help reduce the traffic problem around the schools.
Members of the Newport Police Department are concerned for the safety of all children that attend Newport schools. Officers are providing extra patrol around the schools in the mornings and afternoons. Chief Mark Miranda states, “We encourage parents to find alternative ways to get children to school. Walking, biking, and carpooling will help make arrival at our schools safer.”
For those drivers who do not have children attending schools, it is recommended they avoid the school areas in the mornings and afternoons. Be on the lookout for children elsewhere in town as well. The Police Department wants this to be a year free of any mishaps that involve children.
