We’ve gotten a waterfall of e-mails from helpful NLC readers who passed along magazine articles on this very display of Turkey Vulture (Buzzard) behavior. And they all say the same things – when buzzards eat road kill, it’s full of harmful bacteria. Their beaks, their feet, their wings and head are all crawling with it. Sunshine kills the bacteria, oddly enough. So every time the sun comes out, it’s like a reflex action – out come the wings aimed right at the sun. Kind of an instant where-you-are car wash. Mother Nature is so clever.
