Summer drumming building to a crescendo in Nye Beach
Summer will end as it began in Newport’s historic oceanfront Nye Beach neighborhood — with the beat of hand drums and the song of wooden flutes.
The season finale of the Fourth Annual Nye Beach Second Saturday Summer Celebration & Drum Jam, on Saturday [September 13], from noon to 3:00 p.m.(rain or shine), in the Courtyard at Café Mundo, will feature Thunder & Lightness Duo percussionist Chandler Davis along with a special guest Native American flute player.
Tim Fields-Lardie, a well know performer and flute maker in Eugene and Lane County, will be filling in for Mary-Beth Nickel, the usual Native American flute player with the duo, who has family commitments. Fields-Lardie — of Lakota, Huron, and Celtic descent — performs under his Indian name, Waonze (Grizzly Bear). He was a compelling presence, along with Nickel, at the First Annual Waldport Native American Flute Concert in June and played with Thunder & Lightness at the Yachats River Valley Farm Tour on August 24.
Davis will be joined on traditional hand drums by frequent guests Rodney Turner, a professional drummer/percussionist and local band leader (Undrtow and Rocky Way); Gus Willemin, a multi-instrumentalist, conga player, and frequent sideman with local bands; and Sara Heimlich, who has worked with specialized West African ensembles.
Davis said Waonze has showed himself to be adept at weaving melodic flute improvisations into the intricate multi-part African, Middle Eastern, and traditional Latin polyrhythms that are the hallmarks of Thunder & Lightness and of the Mundo shows. Waonze’s own repertoire includes Native American traditional material, originals, indigenous songs of other cultures, and playful variations on contemporary genres.
The family friendly and free, all-ages community event is hosted by the Newport Community Drum Circle. There will be light percussion toys available for audience participation, and dancers are welcome on the big outdoor stage. Drummers and other musicians interested in participating in the jam need to contact Davis in advance at firstname.lastname@example.org or 541-272-4615.
Café Mundo is in the heart of the Nye Beach business district at 209 NW Coast Street. There is ample seating in the partially covered courtyard and full outdoor food and beverage service is available during the show.
