“SMOKE SIGNALS” WILL PLAY AT THE NEWPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY, TUESDAY, SEPT. 9
“Smoke Signals” will be the featured Literary Flick movie at the Newport Public Library on Tuesday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m. Smoke Signals, is a 1998 film based on Sherman Alexie’s book, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven.
Thomas Builds-the-Fire and Victor Joseph are Coeur d’Alene Indians living in Idaho, who travel to Arizona to retrieve the ashes of Victor’s father, Albert Joseph. Thomas and Victor’s fates were linked by a calamity from the cradle. Thomas was an infant when his parents were killed in a fire; it was Victor’s father who saved him. The boys have been rivals and opposites ever since. As the movie settles into the rhythms of a road picture, the two characters talk, and the dialogue becomes the heart of the movie.
Literary Flicks are free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at 265-2153 or check its website at www.newportlibrary.org.
