A 9 year old girl from Sandy Oregon, visiting the beach with her family, has died of injuries she suffered on the beach Friday afternoon at Northwest 15th, Lincoln City, after a sand hole on the beach collapsed around her.
While North Lincoln Fire-Rescue raced to the scene, others frantically tried to dig her out. Once released from the sand’s watery grip paramedics immediately began CPR but they were not able to revive her. She was rushed to North Lincoln Hospital where she was declared deceased a short time later.
Pce say sand holes may be inviting to play in, but they can also be deadly as today’s tragic event proves. It’s critical that visitors to the beach be aware that sand holes dug deep into the sand means they’re also getting down into the local groundwater. And that means the walls of the hole are saturated with that water, which pushes the walls out and causing them to collapse. It’s like a very powerful version of ‘quick sand.’ One witness that talked with News Lincoln County said she learned that the hole was quite deep and that it took a very long time to get her out. And when they finally retrieved her, she was not conscious or breathing.
Identification of the victim may come over the weekend after the rest of the family is notified of her death.
