Candidates filing: Incumbent City Councilor Dick Beemer, former Airport Director Dennis Reno, and Wendy Engler, involved committeewoman with city/Nye Beach issues.
Former trauma surgeon and two term city councilor Dick Beemer has filed for another term on the council. Beemer had indicated to a number of folks around town that he was thinking about it but wasn’t quite sure that another term would fit inside his extremely busy life.
Beemer told News Lincoln County that he filed after a number of citizens strongly encouraged him to run. He said that he and his fellow councilors have managed to put the city back on a very aggressive program of fixing the town’s sewer, water and street systems and that economic development is now a primary goal of City Hall. He said Newport has a “cracker jack” public works director in Tim Gross and a top flight city manager in Spencer Nebel.
Beemer also said that the city council position races needed additional candidates, certainly more than three (the number of seats open) to make it a real horse race.
Then Tuesday morning former Newport Airport Director Dennis Reno filed for a seat on the council. Reno had locked horns with former City Manager Jim Voetberg on a number of issues. Voetberg fired him. Reno went to court and as a result the city and it’s insurance agency settled with him for a quarter of a million dollars. It was one of a number of personnel cases that cost the city money while Voetberg was city manager.
And just before the end of the last day for filing, Wendy Engler walked up the front steps of City Hall, went straight for the Clerk-Recorder’s Office and filed her candidacy for the city council. Engler has been very active in a kaleidoscope of issues involving the Nye Beach area, helping to redirect financial issues with the Visual Arts Center, chairing the Nye Beach Design Overlay Committee, member of the Newport Wayfinding Committee, member of the Lincoln County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, is a county extension nutritionist and a local business owner. Engler lists her occupation as “retired.”
