A reader in Waldport just got a “please help me” email from a relative vacationing in Haiti saying he got tangled up with an immigration issue there and needs a quick $980 to help him “straighten things out.”
Of course the relative is not in Haiti and is happily at home with no desire to visit that Caribbean Island nation. Our reader wanted everyone to know that The “send me money” scam is not only still all over the phone lines but also now all over the internet. And how could it not be? With all the personal information we share with real friends and family on Facebook alone gives international scammers all the information they need to come up with a script that hits home. This reader didn’t fall for it, fortunately.
So watch those emails from a friend or relative asking for help. Check with the family member or friend directly via phone or SKYPE. These international bandits can be found out by simply dialing a phone number.
Make sure it’s the REAL person and not just a good looking email.
