The giant rosary missing from Sacred Heart Catholic Church is still missing and those who honor it and want to retrieve it are making another plea to the public for help in finding it.
The giant rosary was handmade by Andy Naterlin, a founding member of the Knights of Columbus in Newport and a prominent person in the history of the City of Newport. In the photo above, the rosary is being used at the 50th Annual State Convention of the Knights of Columbus which was held in Newport in 1958. We have been told that the person who purchased it wanted it for the antique fishing floats that it is made from. While we understand this we also hope that this person realizes that this more than just a bunch of antique floats, it is a religious artifact of our parish.
We are celebrating our 125th anniversary of the Catholic Church in Newport in just a few weeks. We truly hope that the rosary will be returned to us in time for its use in this ceremony. Archbishop Alexander K. Sample will be officiating the celebration Mass at 7pm on August 29th at Sacred Heart and we would really like it to be available also.
