At around 6:30pm Wednesday evening a Newport Police Officer spotted a stolen vehicle being driven southbound on Hwy 101 near NW 12th Street. The vehicle, which was reported stolen from Illinois, was occupied by three subjects. The officer called for back up.
Three additional Newport Police Officers, and two Lincoln County Sheriff Deputies, responded quickly.
Officers conducted a “High Risk Vehicle Stop” at the intersection of Hwy 101 and NW 3rd Street. Due to the possibility of unknown threats inside the vehicle, Officers ordered the occupants out of the vehicle at gunpoint. All three complied.
Officers learned the driver of the vehicle, Mohammad Savage, age 28 of Champaign, Illinois, had taken the vehicle without permission from an acquaintance. The other two turned out to be hitchhikers picked up by Savage during his travels. They were not connected to the theft of the vehicle and were released at the scene.
Savage was transported to the Lincoln County Jail and booked on one count of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and on count of general theft. His bail was set at $100,000.
