The driver of a Ford pickup headed north on 101 Sunday afternoon in Newport learned the hard way that consistent vigilance is absolutely required, especially during the tourist season.
Police say the Ford was northbound on 101 in the left lane when he came up on a Jeep that was stopped either for traffic or possibly turning left. The impact was pretty serious, badly damaging the Ford and pushing in the Jeep’s rear bumper assembly.
Luckily, nobody was hurt. The air bag in the Ford deployed.
It’s that part of the year when 75% of the drivers on the road are from out of town and they aren’t aware of local driving conditions, when certain lanes become two or two become one, or where the left turn lanes are.
Over the past couple of months, getting on and off of 101 from side streets has been one daring acrobatic maneuver after another – even for the most skilled of drivers. So…this incident on North 101 in Newport Sunday, is another example of not being 100% alert and “in the groove” with other traffic around you. And just because the speed limit sign says 35 mph doesn’t mean you should be moving along at that clip.
Slow down, create some maneuvering room around you and closely monitor the circus that’s in your rear view mirror.
