On July 30th, 2014, a contractor who was removing salvageable building materials from an old building at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newport mistakenly also took property belonging to the local Knights of Columbus Council. The items were being stored in the building until its demolition was to start. He then sold the items to a person or persons in Newport that he did not know.
Specifically he removed and sold a 50 foot hand-made rosary in a wooden box that was created by some of the original members of our council over 60 years ago. A portion of the Rosary is shown in the accompanying photo.
The Rosary is made of rope and fishing floats with a crucifix that is approximately 18” long at the end. The Rosary has no real monetary value but is of immense sentimental and spiritual value to the Knights of Columbus and the parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish. It is used regularly at the parish for prayer gatherings in our Memorial Garden and by our youth who are learning how to pray the rosary.
Also removed and sold to the same person was our file cabinet with the records and history of our council going back several decades. Again it is of no value to anyone but us so we would very much appreciate having both items returned. We will of course pay you what you paid for them since you had no idea you were purchasing something that was never intended to be sold or disposed of.
If you are the person who purchased the items or have any knowledge of them please feel free to contact me at the phone number below or contact Blaine Hecht at 541-265-6104. You can also call the office at Sacred Heart at 541-265-5101 to make arrangements to have them picked up if needed.
