11:05am Fire rescue on scene. Bicyclist appears uninjured. Was riding bicycle along the sidewalk when a car pulled out from a driveway and Wham!
Authorities remind bicyclists that it’s best not to ride bicycles on sidewalks or in crosswalks. Cars are looking for pedestrians, not fast moving bicycles.
If the main street is too busy for you, many bicyclists use side streets to traverse the main parts of town; Nye, Avery or Benton.
Skateboarders have also been using sidewalks along Highway 101 as their raceways and they’ve been getting hit as well. Motorists just aren’t looking for any traffic except cars and bicyclists when they pull out onto the main roadway. Bikes and skateboards racing down sidewalks are not seen…and upon colliding with vehicles pulling out from store or private driveways, skateboarders and cyclists can be very seriously hurt.
So use side streets. They may take a little longer, but at least you know you’ll get to where you want to go, safely.
