Another heralded American billionaire is funneling some of his riches into the upcoming general election in Oregon. It’s from the “other” side of the river of loot that’s flowing through many communities around the country. It’s Democrat businessman Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City.
Bloomberg has donated handsomely to causes close to his heart, including campaigns to expand gun control laws nationwide. But today, Bloomberg is reported to be poised to invest some serious money into changing Oregon’s primary voting system.
There’s a measure on the ballot this November that would make primaries effectively non-partisan. Candidates can still run from what every political party they like, but the public votes for anyone they want and the top two vote getters face off in the general election in November. That way, says Bloomberg and others, the candidates have to deal with all the voters throughout the entire election season – no early pandering to radicals and then running over to the “middle of the road” when the general election rolls around.
