Newport Police Officers were dispatched Sunday evening to the Yaquina Bay Bridge on a report that a white male had climbed over the bridge railing, down the arches, and onto a support pillar just south of the center span. Officers spotted Donald Lee Allen, 45, of Pendleton lightly clad, cold, shaking and letting loose with long strings of swear words that boomed over the South Beach Marina.
Allen was standing on a support pillar approximately 20 feet above the water.
The Coast Guard responded with a motorlifeboat but was unable to reach the man due shallow water. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol Deputy was summoned to assist using a smaller craft. The deputy was able to entice Allen off his perch, down a ladder and into the sheriff’s boat.
He was transported to shore and evaluated by medical personnel. He was then transported to the Lincoln County Jail, where he was lodged with a bail of $85,000. Allen was charged with Criminal Trespass; Disorderly Conduct; and Giving False Information to a Police Officer.
Officers say Mr. Allen has been rather uncooperative with attempts to snap a jail mug shot of him. They’re going to try again sometime today.
