On Saturday , August 9, from 3 to 5 p.m., the final staged reading from the novel, “Riva Beside Me” by Carla Perry, will take place in the courtyard of Cafe Mundo, 209 NW Coast Street. Free admission, donations gratefully appreciated. Staged readings have already been performed to SRO crowds in Portland, Toledo, Yachats, Canyon Way Bookstore in Newport, as well as at the Newport Visual Arts Center and Manzanita’s Hoffman Center. No additional performances of the staged reading are being scheduled. Response has been so enthusiastic, that a full screenplay script of the entire book is being developed, which expands the cast to include all the major characters.
“After experiencing the staged reading at Canyon Way, I bought a copy of “Rive Beside Me,” and have just finished it. I was swept away by the subtle details and enormous visual context gained by reading the novel in its entirety. It was obviously an extraordinary experience for the audience, for the four actors, and indeed for my friends who came with me. I am thrilled to see that you have scheduled additional readings.” Barbara Gast, Summit.
The novel, “Riva Beside Me: New York City 1963-1966,” is based on real life, growing up in Manhattan in a dysfunctional family. But the story is one of transition and hope, where humor and love prevail. The tale makes it obvious that angels walk among us.
The script for the staged readings is excerpted from the book, narrowed down to focus on just four of the characters. The cast includes SARAH GAYLE as “Riva,” HOVEY GROSVENOR as “Richard,” KE EDMISTEN as “The Mother,” and WAYNE PLOURDE as “The Narrator.” Author CARLA PERRY will be on hand to introduce the show and answer questions afterward.
“What a wonderful and memorable evening, I will never forget it. The performance is incredibly thought-provoking and the cast is incredible. I really got the sense that The Narrator (Wayne Plourde) comes from another realm. Sarah Gayle as Riva certainly comes across as the voice of God or the Spirit. The Mother (KE Edmisten) is perfect, and where did you ever find the young man (Hovey Grosvenor) who plays Richard? He took my breath away.” –Shirley Erikson, Portland.
Paperback copies of “Riva Beside Me” will be available for sale and autographing on August 9 at Cafe Mundo. The book is also available at Powell’s Books in Portland, SolaLuna Gallery in Toledo, and in Newport at Canyon Way, Nye Beach Bookhouse, Things Rich and Strange, and at the Toledo and Newport public libraries. E-Books are available through Amazon, KOBO, Barnes and Noble, and Apple iTunes.
