Relays for Life Ceremonies begin Friday evening all across the country in big cities and tiny hamlets, anywhere cancer has touched or scarred the lives of its victims and families.
And another Relay for Life ceremony will again take to the football field at Newport High School Friday and Saturday. Hundreds of participants are expected. Each will bring their gratitude for continued life as well as their sorrow and deep saddness that a loved one or friend did not survive the onslaught of the many forms of cancer that kills newborns to the elderly.
Newport’s Relay for Life begins at the Newport High School Football field beginning at 6:30pm for what’s called the Surviver Lap – those who have thus far survived the cancer that tried to kill them. Then at 10pm the field will be encircled with a candle luminaria complete with the names of those who succumbed to cancer.
From there, families and friends will walk or run as teams to fulfill their pledged laps around the track for which they have pre-arranged donations to the American Cancer Society. Those donations are aimed at more cancer research and assistance to those stricken with cancer.
In addition to the lap walking there will be a Kids Zone with playful activities, Zumba workouts, and movies.
