Newport Port Commissioners have tentatively approved the basics on a new, nearly one million dollar port headquarters building, to be constructed just east of Englund Marine and the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club.
To not be overly obtrusive for the neighbors, it’ll be a single story building, 17 feet high, and due to winter storm winds coming primarily from the south, it will be situated mostly north – south.
The building will have offices for staff, common work areas and a conference/formal commission meeting room compete with generous seating capacity for the public.
The building will also provide space for U.S. Customs which will lease the space at at rate that will pay off its cost in less than ten years, according to plans.
As for how to pay for the building, the proposal is to borrow long term from an internal port fund as well as borrowing from a commercial loan source.
Commissioners expect to be moving into their new headquarters sometime in 2016.
