WOODEN BOAT SHOW FEATURES BOAT BUILDING FOR EVERYONE
This August 16th and 17th the Port of Toledo will present its 10th annual Wooden Boat Show. The Port of Toledo’s Wooden Boat Show continues to celebrate the historic traditions of wooden boats and recreation along the Yaquina River. Wooden boats from throughout the northwest are on display at the Port of Toledo’s Waterfront Park and Marina.
The show offers a variety of free activities including maritime related informational booths, kids’ games, as well as boat building activity to observe and live music. The show also features local arts and crafts vendors, delicious food offerings, and a silent auction. The Port of Toledo is very pleased, that through the show’s 10 years of evolution, it has continued to be a fun, easy going event, with something to offer the whole family.
This year the Show will host boatbuilding for everyone! To get in on the action, pre-register and be ready to start building!
The Family Boat Building event is a great deal for families or teams of 2 – 6 people to build a wood 15’ sea kayak of their own. Materials, instruction, and memories to keep for a lifetime are provided for $400. The building project is guided by the Port’s Boatyard Manager, Leo Newberg and local Boatwright Rick Johnson. Families start work on Friday and continue construction through the boat show on Saturday and Sunday, launching their kayaks on Sunday. More information and registration forms are available at www.portoftoledo.org.
A new event this year will be Youth boat building. This is an exciting opportunity for youth ages 10 – 18 to build their own 8 foot “Elegant Punt” from a kit, under the direction of experienced boat builders, using simple hand tools. The cost to register for this event is $25 to encourage the youth’s pride in ownership, with the additional costs of the project being covered through sponsors. Space is limited so sign up today.
Additionally, celebrating creative boat design and innovation, but not necessarily long term durability, Georgia Pacific is again sponsoring the Containerboard Boat Contest. This exciting event allows teams or individuals to test their best designs against other community containerboard boat builders. A starter kit of containboard is provided by Georgia Pacific, with no limit to the amount of additional cardboard used. See the Port of Toledo’s website for rules or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
And, as always, the Kids Boat Building activity is free and will be well stocked and ready for the little ones. Kids are provided with wood hulls and an array of recycled and craft materials to build their very own model sized wooden boat masterpiece. This activity is graciously supported through volunteers from the Four Square Church, and is always a hit.
The Port of Toledo greatly appreciates the support of our major sponsors as well as the numerous individuals, businesses & groups that have donated time, goods & services to this free community event. Thank You! Georgia-Pacific, Oregon Coast Bank, Dahl Disposal Service, Toledo Rotary Club, CoastCom Inc, Fishpeople Seafood and Pacific Maritime & Heritage Center.
See you at the show, the third weekend of August!
