Fighting crime one neighborhood get together at a time
‘America’s Night Out Against Crime’
From Newport Police Department
On Tuesday, August 5th, neighborhoods throughout Newport are invited to join with thousands of communities nationwide for the “31st Annual National Night Out” crime prevention event.
National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, and co-sponsored locally by the Newport Police Department, will involve more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime, drug, and violence prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know the neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
On the evening of August 5th, residents in neighborhoods throughout Newport and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and law enforcement. Neighborhoods throughout Newport are encouraged to host a variety of special events, such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from law enforcement, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities, and anti-crime rallies.
If you need help planning an event, visit the National Night Out Website at www.nno.org.
The Newport Police Department is committed to working with neighborhoods to prevent crime, and will be visiting those hosting events on August 5th. If you are in Newport, and would like us to join you, contact us at 541-574-3348 to make an appointment.
