F/V Raven Dancer – Engine exhaust stack fire – Coast Guard races out to help


F/V Raven Dancer is pulled into Yaquina Bay by a Coast Guard 47′ Motor Lifeboat. 53 miles in a little over 10 hours.

The Fishing Vessel Raven Dancer radioed the Coast Guard late Tuesday evening saying they had a fire aboard and that they needed help. They gave their position as being about 53 miles (corrected) offshore from Newport.
Coast Guard Rescue Helicopters from Newport and Astoria roared out to assess the situation. It’s appears they managed to help the crew bring the situation back under control. No reports of any injures.
At 1:45 am the Coast Guard Helicopter was still on scene with a motor lifeboat from Newport expected to arrive on scene in about 45 minutes to provide further assistance.
10:00am Wednesday – Coast Guard motorlifeboat is towing the F/V Raven Dancer into Newport. Expected to arrive at around 1pm. Coast Guard says the fire was “a smoldering stack.” No injuries.
The F/V Raven Dancer is a 48 foot, 50 ton fishing vessel based out of Westport, WA.
1pm F/V Raven Dancer is pulled into Yaquina Bay and docks itself on the Bayfront. Coast Guard inspectors determine there was a hot spot along the main engine exhaust pipe which ignited wood materials around it. Repairs are being summoned. Crew anxious to get back out on the ocean to troll for albacore. Crew thanked the Coast Guard for their quick response and safe return to shore.
