Former Newport area nurse and mother of 7 has died barely five days after being diagnosed with a very aggressive strain of lung cancer. A plea for help from the community has gone out from her friends and surviving family:
Boni Drago was one of the first graduates of Oregon Coast Community College of nursing. She put herself through nursing school as a single mom of 7 wonderful children. She passed away this last week on July 1st, due to a very aggressive lung cancer, which was misdiagnosed as pneumonia. As strong as this amazing woman was, she was unable to beat this horrific disease; she succumbed a short 5 days later after learning of the cancer. Boni leaves behind 7 amazing and wonderful children, daughter-in-law, and 2 grandchildren whom she loved more than life itself.
Boni was an excellent mother and nurse. She worked at the Newport Hospital for approx 5 years before moving from Toledo to Salem to be closer to her grandkids. The expertise and compassion she showed to her patients will be with them forever. For those of you who knew her, or even met her, know what a sweet kind hearted soul she was and will be remembered as. Her family and friends are heartbroken over this huge loss of this amazing and beautiful person. Within the last year, she was able to fulfill a lifetime dream of buying her own home. What an accomplishment for a single mother of 7.
