2:58pm The Crab Pot Seafood Market, at 101 and SW 60th, has called 9-1-1 saying they had a problem with their crab pot smoker – it caught fire and the fire is spreading to the rest of the restaurant. Watch for emergency vehicles and flaggers.

3:02pm The Crab Pot Seafood Market is on fire. Confirmed structure fire.

3:04pm Fire is in the rear of the market. There have been explosions – possibly from propane tanks.

3:06pm Highway 101 is shut down at Pro Build on the south. Highway 101 is blocked at the north end of the fire area. 101 southbound is shut down at the Bay House.

3:07pm Detour from the south is Drift Creek Road, then left on 48th.

3:12pm Pacific Power has been summoned to shut down power in the area. Live wires are falling.

3:13pm Neighbors with a motor home are trying to move vehicles away from the heat and fire.

3:15pm Alerting ODOT that 101 is going to be a parking lot for a long time. Also alerting city hall that the city needs to be ready to lose a lot of water storage based on the size of the fire. The fire trucks are pumping huge amounts of water on the blaze.

Understandably a good many Lincoln City residents are mourning the loss of the Crab Pot Seafood Market. Some say it was the oldest, still operating business in Lincoln City history – the last 40 years owned by long time businessman Allen Black. It is unknown if Allen and his wife will rebuild. Ironically it was in the late 1920s that a cottage fire on the very same site that made way for the construction of the initial Crab Pot, built by Ariel and Alice Thomas in 1930. Melody McKenzie sent us some reference material that chronicles the history of the Cutler City area, long before it became part of greater Lincoln City.

Here’s the link Melody provides. Click here. After you click it, go to page 20 where the story of the creation of the Crab Pot became part of the history of Cutler City.
