A routine traffic stop landed a Waldport man in the Lincoln County Jail this week. A Newport police officer with K-9 Eyan in the back seat pulled Keith Kowitz over at East Olive at Douglas on a routine traffic stop. When talking with Kowitz the officer suspected that there was more to the stop than just a traffic violation. The officer asked Kowitz if he could search his car. Kowitz said yes. At that point K-9 Eyan went to work.
The officer reported that Eyan “alerted” on several areas in the interior of the car. Eyan was especially focused on a backpack. The officer asked permission to search the backpack and Kowitz consented, according to the officer. Inside the backpack the officer said he found meth and digital scales presumably used in the sale of the drug.
Kowitz was cuffed and transported to the county jail where he was booked on charges of possession of meth and possession for sales. His bail was set at $150,000.
