The 28-foot Fishing Vessel Rip Rider, homeported in Newport, began taking on water at around 8:20 Sunday morning about 15 miles off the coast from Newport. Fisherman Shorty Apperson said his motor had stopped suddenly. When he went back to check it the engine area was flooding.
Apperson immediately called the Coast Guard and a motorlifeboat from Newport and a Coast Guard Helicopter raced to the scene and found the Rip Rider already listing. The helo lifted him the off the sinking vessel and was safely returned to Newport.
Meanwhile, the Rip Rider was last reported as a hazard to navigation as partially submerged at 44.37.21N, and 124.29.13W. All mariners are advised to keep a sharp eye out for it.
