Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of a fatal traffic crash that occurred Tuesday evening on Highway 20 just west of Eddyville.
On Tuesday, May 20, at approximately 8:00pm, a 2004 GMC pickup driven by GARY RICHARD LANGSTAFF, age 66, from Siletz, was traveling on Highway 20 near milepost 23 and had just passed a line of traffic. Entering a left curve, LANGSTAFF lost control and the GMC pickup crossed the centerline colliding head-on into a 2013 Ford F350 truck pulling a Desert Fox trailer.
LANGSTAFF was confirmed deceased upon arrival by emergency responders. A dog in his pickup also died.
The Ford pickup’s driver, MARTIN D. STAM, age 48, from Siletz, was transported by PACWEST ambulance to a Newport hospital with minor injuries.
Both drivers were using safety restraints and both vehicles’ airbags deployed.
OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are leading the investigation. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Interagency Crash Team, Toledo Fire & Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene. Senior Trooper Brian Tucker is the lead investigator.
The highway was blocked intermittently for 5 hours.
