Waldport had another Burn to Learn exercise today as Central Coast Fire Rescue hosted several regional fire departments to practice setting and extinguishing fires at various stages of destruction of the two auxiliary buildings behind the old elementary school, near the Moose Lodge.
Fire fighters practiced their tactics and got the feel of a lot of heat and smoke that they would face in a real fire situation where they’re trying to save lives and property. Firefighters from Florence came up and others from Lincoln County first lit the building closest to the old school, then the farthest away, up the street.
Come July, the rest of the old school will come down – not with fire but with a bulldozer. The wood and other recyclables will be separated out and then hauled to a recycling center.
All the old schools that a lot of the older townspeople attended, will soon be gone. First the high school, then the middle school, and soon the rest of the old elementary school.
A true passing of an era.
