May Day Celebration
The popular May Day Celebration is returning to the Newport 60+ Center on Thursday May 1st. The event starts at 1pm, but come early to peruse the magnificent silent auction items. The Coordinator of the center, Peggy O’Callaghan, says “I can’t thank the community enough for all their support and contributions to the center.” This year delectable dessert selections with scrumptious coffee will be served.
This is a favorite for the Red Hat groups to help celebrate May Day and honor Older Americans Month. The Red Hat society members are regulars along with other guests who compete by wearing bright spring colors. Our dining room pops with color. A style show with fashions will also be added. Come view the new spring fashions. Reservations are requested so please RSVP by calling 541-265-9617 and reserve your table or seat today. The center is located between the City Hall and the Recreation Center. The address is 20 SE 2nd Street.
This event is also an opportunity to showcase the center and programs and activities we offer. The center offers over 30 programs. Currently, there are over a dozen fitness classes, 16 Social groups, and 5 senior educational programs. Please visit our web site to see what programs, activities and trips we are currently offering at www.newportoregon.gov/sc.
Thanks to President Jimmy Carter’s 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month (May), is now called “Older Americans Month,” and has become a tradition. Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since JFK has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other such activities. This event helps us celebrate and bring in our own tradition of Loyalty days. This year’s theme for Older American Month is “Safe today; Healthy tomorrow.” This May, come and play and tour our center and find out what’s right for you.
