The Depoe Bay City Council may have made history Tuesday night when they unanimously approved 11-year old Depoe Bay resident Kylie Carver to the city Salmon Enhancement Commission. Kylie is now officially Commissioner Kylie Carver who will now sit and make policy with her fellow volunteers with whom she has been serving since she was 3 years old. Back then her father, Paul, who is also on the commission, brought her down to the Coho smolt pens and taught her how to feed the fish, clip their fins and aim them in the right direction to depart the World’s Smallest Harbor and head for the open sea, where they grow big and strong.
Kylie said she’s learned a lot and had great fun working with her dad. And it seemed a natural next step that she sit next him on the commission. So she filed her application with the city! And as fate would have it, she was the only applicant! So until she’s at least 14, she’ll be spending her time not only feeding fish and clipping fins, she’ll be getting a participatory dose of policy making and a little bit of hometown politics that surrounds any city council appointed body. But she can handle it. Just ask her!
