The body of Michael Lanpheare was found on the beach this morning just south of the Newport Airport – and north of the Lost Creek Wayside.
A woman walking her dog on the beach came across it in the 8 o’clock hour this morning. The body lay just about 50 feet beyond the surf line because of the outgoing tide.
9-1-1 was called and Oregon State Troopers along with Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies and the District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene.
Finding Michael Lanpheare’s body it will no doubt further support the DA’s contention that the last person known to be with Lanpheare, Donald Lawyer, got into an altercation with Lanpheare on the beach at Seal Rock with Lanpheare ending up in the ocean. The Coast Guard, OSP and Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies immediately launched an intensive search but found no trace of him.
Accused assailant Donald Lawyer was picked up a week ago today walking nude along 101 in Seal Rock with numerous bleeding wounds. He was taken to PCH for treatment of his wounds and an obvious drug overdose. He was also scheduled for a mental health evaluation but he fled the hospital before it could be initiated. Police tracked him down at a Newport residence where they took him back into custody and returned him to the hospital. During further discussions with Lawyer police determined that he was likely connected with the disappearance of Michael Lanpheare sometime Tuesday night/Wednesday morning on the beach at Seal Rock.
Lawyer is being held on $300,000 bond at the Lincoln County Jail. He was arraigned earlier in the week on manslaughter charges.
